Kamień filozoficzny czyli legendarna substancja od wieków poszukiwana przez alchemików. Rzekomo kamień ten miał być substancją, za pomocą której metale nieszlachetne (np.ołów) można przekształcić w wyniku procesu transmutacji metali w metale szlachetne miedzy innymi złoto czy srebro, pomijając zasady "równej wymiany". Kamień filozoficzny znany był nazywany również " Bazyliszkiem " gdyż sprawiał iż rtęć krzepła, zamieniając się przez to w złoto, mówiono tez o nim " Salamandra" ponieważ był niepalny, miano "Kameleona" przyjął gdyż człowiek, wpatrując się w niego, widział grę zmiennych barw (tzw. "pawi ogon"). Utożsamiano go z obojnaczym Merkuriuszem, ponieważ wyrażał całość, współistnienie sprzeczności, płci oraz stanów skupienia . Kamień filozoficzny był kwintesencją , czyli jednością czterech żywiołów.
