Boat people określenie uchodźców lub osoby emigrujące z powodów ekonomicznych (najczęściej z ubóstwa) , którzy starają się opuścić kraj drogą wodną, najczęściej przy pomocy jednostek pływających - niewielkich statków, łodzi lub tratw. Wybierają drogę przez może, ze względu położenie geograficzne państwa opuszczanego i docelowego, kryje się za tym mniejsze ryzyko wykrycia oraz znajomość morza lub po prostu, brak innej drogi ucieczki.
