1. Dog Friends, a support group that provides dogs for people with disabilities, celebrates its fifth anniversary this week. Its specially trained animals offer practical help and friendship to hundreds of people in Melbourne. Members include people who are blind or can’t hear very well and those who find it difficult to walk. With the help of their four-legged assistants these people find a new sense of freedom, together with all of the other advantages that a pet can bring.







2. Many people turn to doctors, self-help books or herbal treatments to improve their health. But they’re missing a powerful weapon that could help them reduce illness, recover faster and live longer: their friends. Scientists are only now starting to understand the importance of friendship and social networks for general health. An Australian study has found that people with a large circle of friends are 22% more likely to live longer.







3. Matt Adams and his friends were talking in the school playground one morning when a crow flew over their heads. At first they thought the big, black bird wanted to hurt them, but it landed on Matt’s arm instead. After school, the bird took a ride on 15-year-old Matt’s head and shoulders. He now lives with Matt in the family home. “He’s such a cool pet,” says Matt. “Mum said I could keep him and he’s like my best friend now.”







4. A recent study to celebrate the 75th anniversary of London’s Victoria Bus Station asked 2,000 people about their experiences travelling by bus. According to the results, one in 15 people make a lasting friendship during a long-distance journey and one in 30 people fall in love. The station manager said: “We’re not sure why this happens with our passengers. Perhaps it’s because they’re in a small space for a long time with nothing better to do!”
