The Śląskie Voivodeship lies in the southern part of Poland, bordering from the south with the Slovak Republic and Czech Republic, from the west with the Opolskie Voivodeship, from the north with the Łódzkie Voivodeship and from the east with the Małopolskie and Świętokrzyskie. Within the area of 12,300 sq. km., there are almost 5 million inhabitants. Area-wise, it is 14th voivodeship in Poland. Population-wise, it is the second. Do not hesitate to visit the land of immaculate nature, rich cultural life and varied landscape. It is here, in Częstochowa, in the Pauline Fathers’ monastery on Jasna Góra that beats “the heart of the nation”. The Sanctuary with its Miraculous Picture of Black Madonna is visited every year by almost five million pilgrims from the whole world.
The mountain ranges of the Beskid Śląski and Żywiecki as well as the areas of Jura Krakowsko-Częstochowska are dream places for active tourism, both in winter and summertime. The Pszczyna Dukes’ Castle, with its charming palace and park complex, the medieval ruins of defensive castles on the “Route of Eagle Nests” are the most famous objects on the long lists of the castles and palaces, once functioning as defensive or representative objects. In Silesia, there are also rare and unique monuments of old technique.
The underground flow of vessels along the corridors of the Historical Silver-Mine and the Black Trout Drift in Tarnowskie Góry, the “Queen Louise” Heritage Park in Zabrze, the Brewery Museum in Tychy are definitely worth-seeing. From the “Katowice” International Airport in Pyrzowice one may fly directly to over ten cities in Europe, Asia and Africa. Owing to the network of motorways and express roads, the best in Poland, it is easy to reach us by car.
The railway connections of the InterCity or EuroCity network ensure fast transport to the region’s capital – Katowice from other Polish and European cities.

CZĘSTOCHOWA
The Pauline Fathers’ Monastery on Jasna Góra in Częstochowa, with its Miraculous Picture of Black Madonna, is the greatest attraction for pilgrims and tourists visiting our region in great numbers. According to the legend, the Miraculous Picture was painted by St. Luke on the board of the Holy Family’s table. The Pope John Paul II, who visited Jasna Góra many times as the Krakow metropolitan and then as the Bishop of Rome, named Częstochowa as the “spiritual capital of Poland”. It is estimated that the Sanctuary on Jasna Góra is visited every year by about 5 million people from various parts of the world. The monastery is also a great treasury of the national souvenirs. One may not get familiar with and comprehend the Polish history without visiting Jasna Góra.
PIEKARY ŚLĄSKIE
Piekary Śląskie with its Picture of the Holy Mary of Piekary is a very special place for any Upper-Silesian. The tradition of women’s and men’s walking pilgrimages to this sanctuary dates back to 17th century. Karol Wojtyła, later John Paul II, was a frequent visitor and a preacher here. Even today, the pilgrimages of the women dressed in traditional clothes provide the opportunity to experience the living Silesian folklore.
Cultural Heritage
Castles and Palaces
There are over ten castles and palaces in Silesia, once defensive or representative. It is the palace & park complex of the Pszczyna Dukes in Pszczyna that is a real pearl among them and which houses the Castle Museum. The object, erected in the French neo-renaissance style with its magnificently preserved interiors, is surrounded by a vast landscape park. Nearby, in Promnice, the is the charming Shooting Lodge, the former residence of the Pszczyna Dukes, where currently there is a luxurious hotel and a restaurant.The region’s cross-border nature is documented by over ten defensive castles erected on the Kracow-Częstochowa Upland, located on the Route of Eagle Nests. Many objects have been preserved in the form of ruins. The most picturesque ones are made up of the remains of the castle in Ogrodzieniec, not far from Zawiercie, as well as those of the castle in Olsztyn, Bobolice and Mirów.
Folk Culture
The folklore of the Beskidy Highlanders, the inhabitants of the Upper Silesia and the Coal Basin is cultivated by numerous amateur folk groups, whereas in Koszęcin, there is a domicile of the renowned, not only in Poland, the Song and Dance Ensemble “Śląsk”. The numerous folk events provide the opportunity for presenting old customs, songs and dances. The most popular are: “The Żywiec Festivities”, “The Beskidy Highlanders’ Week of Culture” as well as “The International Students’ Festival of Folklore”.
